The competitions are open to any US rent-paying roommate over the age of 18. A roommate is classed as anyone living in shared accommodation where at least 2 of the residents are unrelated (and not in a relationship). This includes, but is not limited to:
Any one of a group of friends renting an apartment or house together
A lodger renting a room in a family home
A tenant renting a room in shared property
The following would NOT be eligible - including, but not limited to:
A home owner who is letting a room out (though the lodger would be eligible)
A tenant living alone in a one bed apartment
A couple renting on their own
Additionally, if you’re not currently living in shared accommodation but are currently looking for an apartment share you are eligible to enter.
To enter, you need to link your Facebook account to your SpareRoom account. Only one account, and therefore entry, allowed per individual.
By giving us your email address you agree to us contacting you by email. These emails may include: details of the next month's competition; winners of previous competitions; plus ways to earn additional entries in order to increase your chances. You can unsubscribe at any time, however, unsubscribing cancels any competition entries you currently have.
The closing dates for entering the current competitions are listed at https://www.spareroom.com/liverentfree but are generally midday (US time) on the last day of the month.
No purchase necessary.
All entry instructions form part of the terms and conditions.
Extra entries and increasing your chances
For every friend you refer who enters (using the special personal link provided to you), you receive two additional entries. Each referred person must be a unique individual (not the same person with a different email address for instance). We reserve the right to investigate friend referrals for fraud.
You also gain an extra entry when friends of those you refer enter.
When entering a competition, you are rewarded for any previous competition entries you made, meaning your chances improve over time. E.g. if you entered May's, June's and July's monthly draw, you will automatically get 4 entries if you join the August draw.
You may be offered the opportunity to earn additional entries. The details and terms of these will be described within the offer.
The prizes and the winner
The winner will be chosen randomly and notified by email within 7 days of the closing date. The winner will have a further 7 days to confirm acceptance of the prize.
If the winner fails, or is unable for any reason, to accept the prize or cannot be contacted, SpareRoom reserves the right to award the prize to another entrant drawn at random.
The prize will take the form of your monthly room rent. We will require proof of your rent.
If you can’t supply proof, the average rent for a room (inc utilities) in your town or city, according to SpareRoom’s most recent Rental Index, will be used to calculate your prize, meaning you may win more or less than your actual monthly rent.
If you are currently not renting but are looking for a room, then the prize will be calculated using SpareRoom’s most recent Rental Index.
If the winner lives in New York City (and can’t supply proof of rent), the average rent for his or her borough will be used to calculate the prize.
If the winner is currently looking for an apartment share (but isn’t currently sharing) then the prize will be the average rent in the city they’re looking in, according to SpareRoom’s most recent Rental Index. If the city is New York then the prize will be for the borough they intend to live in.
The prize for the competition to win a year’s rent will not exceed $30,000.
Proof of residence will be required to collect the prize.
The winner must complete a W9 form from IRS to be able to claim the prize.
The winner and guest may be required, and therefore consent, to taking part in some publicity for SpareRoom as required. At the very least a name and photo will be required for promotion on SpareRoom and/or the competition emails.
SpareRoom reserves the right to vary, amend or withdraw the competitions on reasonable notice.
