Sunny, Private Penthouse Room w/ Incredible Views
The House:
Welcome to Calihouse, a 9-person Queen Anne–style Victorian mansion in the heart of Adams Morgan. It’s a three-story historic home and one of the last in the neighborhood that hasn’t been converted into separate units.
Shared spaces include:
- A large living room with plenty of seating, TV, multiple streaming logins, and book and board game library
- Bright, sunny dining room with a stocked bar cabinet and coffee station
- Fully equipped kitchen with ample fridge space for each housemate
One of the standout features is the huge backyard and wooden deck, among the largest in the neighborhood. Perfect for reading, relaxing, gardening, and hosting gatherings big or small. We’ve hosted barbecues (we have a grill and smoker), parties, and cozy hangouts around the fire pit. There’s also a propane heater for colder months, and in spring/summer the yard is full of flowers and vegetables, with planters available if you like to garden. We also have a quaint front porch with outdoor chairs, shaded by a tree with string lights, which is perfect for relaxing after work in the summer and meeting neighbors.
The Location:
Tucked just off a quiet street on the 18th Street Corridor, you get the best of both worlds: peaceful residential vibes with walkability in a lively area of the city.
- Steps from bars, restaurants, and nightlife (our favorite happy hour spot is literally 1 min away)
- Walking distance to grocery stores: Streets (7 min), Harris Teeter (9 min), Safeway (13 min), Trader Joe’s (15 min)
- 12–15 minute walk to Dupont Circle Metro (Red Line), 1-2 minutes to various convenient bus lines.
- 8 min walk to Malcom X park; 20 minute walk to the Smithsonian Zoo
For runners and sports lovers:
- Quick jog to Rock Creek Park and its trail network
- Across the street from public tennis courts and Mint Gym
- Next to Marie Reed Public Pool and soccer fields with active rec leagues
The Housemates:
We’re an eclectic, mixed-gender group of professionals and students in our 20s to 30s who value both community and independence.
This group house has existed continuously for over a decade and has a strong sense of tradition. That includes holiday gatherings, including a few made-up holidays, potluck style dinners, themed parties, board game nights, movie nights, and the occasional living room karaoke. We also are an Admo PorchFest host house, which we look forward to every Spring and Fall. Every once in a while, we also plan group trips such as cabin weekends, hikes, or camping trips.
Participation in house activities is always encouraged, especially taking initiative to suggest ideas, but it is never mandatory. We fully respect when someone is not up for socializing, whether for personal, work, or other reasons.
Day-to-day life is calm and comfortable. Most housemates are focused on work or school during the week, with staggered schedules that keep the kitchen and common areas from feeling crowded. After work, there is usually someone around to grab a happy hour beer, catch up, or watch a movie or sports game together. Many days, you will forget you are living with nine people at all.
We value straightforward, respectful communication. Housemates stay connected through a group chat used for house logistics, coordination, and sharing fun stuff too.
Each housemate has a set of shared responsibilities, and we hold periodic house check-ins to discuss chores, logistics, and upcoming plans or trips. We aim to keep the house tidy, but with this many people it will not be spotless all the time. We are flexible, realistic, and good about picking up slack for each other when needed.
The Room:
This is the nicest and largest room in the house, suitable for an individual or a couple (currently comfortably occupied by a couple who both work from home in the room). You could live in this room day to day and feel like you have your own place.
Located on the third floor, this penthouse-style suite features:
- Five large, south-facing windows with awesome views over neighboring rooftops
- Sightlines to the Washington Monument, St. Matthew’s Cathedral, and even the Capitol Dome from one window. You can see every fireworks show on the National Mall clearly.
- Tons of natural light (amazing in winter), plus both blackout and sheer curtains when you need them.
- High ceilings
The room includes a private en-suite bathroom with two sinks, a shower with a bathtub, toilet with a bidet, and a window/fan for exceptional ventilation.
A wide, decorative brick fireplace divides the space into distinct sleeping and living areas. The layout easily accommodates a large bed, work desks, a small couch, large TV, Mini-fridge. The bed area has built in book shelves for a significant library.
There’s also a walk-in closet with mirrored sliding doors, plus additional long-term storage available on the third-floor landing and in the attic.
