Which cities have the most climate-conscious roommates?

May 2024 - At a time when climate change demands action more than ever, people are increasingly aware of the need to make environmentally conscious choices in their daily lives. Your living arrangement can be one of the biggest impacts on your lifestyle. For one, living with roommates versus living alone can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Also, choosing roommates who share a climate-conscious mindset can make living a sustainable lifestyle easier and more achievable.

SpareRoom analyzed data from over 47,000 roommates, based on what they listed as their interests in their profiles. We then ranked the cities where you'd be most likely to find roommates that are climate-conscious.

The most climate-conscious roommates live in:

Portland secures the top spot for climate-conscious roommates, which is unsurprising given that the city has a reputation for being one of the greenest cities in the U.S. due to its comprehensive sustainability initiatives, as well as offering bike lanes and bike-sharing programs to reduce carbon emissions. Denver, Sacramento, Seattle and Washington D.C. are also known for prioritizing renewable energy, investing in green spaces, and re-working public transportation systems to reduce carbon footprints.

Matt Hutchinson, spokesperson for SpareRoom comments:“Living with roommates is not only better financially, it's also more environmentally conscious. Simply sharing space, appliances and utilities is a more effective way of reducing your carbon footprint versus living alone. Living with roommates can also help to build sustainable habits, such as bulk buying, cooking together and carpooling.”
