Rustic Beach Cottage house share on Vashon Island

PLEASE READ: $1,975/month is for the ENTIRE PRIVATE TWO-BEDROOM LOWER LEVEL — NOT per bedroom.

Because SpareRoom does not allow me to list both bedrooms together as one space, I want to be very clear: I am looking for one housemate, couple, or possibly a parent with one child to rent the entire downstairs level for $1,975/month plus half of utilities. The two bedrooms are not being rented separately.

This is a unique house-share situation that offers much more privacy than a typical roommate arrangement. The home is a large, approximately 2,700-square-foot split-level waterfront house on the north end of Vashon Island. My teenage daughter and I occupy the upstairs, and the entire lower level is for rent.

Your private downstairs space includes:
• Two bedrooms
• Private bathroom
• Living room with a wood-burning stove
• Kitchenette
• Washer and dryer
• Two private exterior entrances

There are essentially no shared common living spaces. The upstairs and downstairs are connected by an interior stairway, but we keep that area blocked off and insulated with a soundproofing curtain for additional privacy and noise reduction. My current housemates and I only see each other when we intentionally make plans to spend time together — in day-to-day life, the two levels function very independently.

About the location:
Vashon Island offers a peaceful, rural lifestyle with trees, water, wildlife, and a strong sense of community, while still providing access to Seattle. There is passenger water taxi service from Vashon directly to the downtown Seattle waterfront, making this a potentially great fit for someone who works downtown or has a hybrid schedule and wants to come home to a quieter setting.

Vashon is also an extremely LGBTQ-friendly and welcoming community. LGBTQ+ individuals, couples, and families should feel very comfortable and at home here. I am a strong LGBTQ+ ally, and creating a respectful, inclusive household is important to me.

About me and the kind of fit I’m looking for:
I’m a single mom, local small business owner, and have 50/50 custody of my teenage daughter. I don’t smoke, drink alcohol, or use recreational drugs. Because my daughter lives here half the time, safety, trust, and good judgment are extremely important to me. The landlord requires a background check and income verification, and I am looking for someone who is responsible, stable, respectful, and genuinely compatible with this living situation.

I would ideally love to find another single parent with one child, but I am absolutely open to other situations and the right person or people.

I also want to be upfront that I am not looking for someone who simply wants to “try out” island living for a year. A one-year lease is required, but beyond that, I’m hoping to find someone who feels genuinely drawn to this lifestyle and can see themselves being happy here longer-term if it’s a good mutual fit. Finding the right housemate is especially important to me as a single parent, and I’m hoping to find a kind, trustworthy, stable person who values having a peaceful home and would like to put down some roots rather than treat this as a temporary experiment.

We don’t currently have pets, although we may get a dog at some point. Dogs may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Unfortunately, no cats due to allergies.

Rent: $1,975/month for the entire two-bedroom lower level, plus half of utilities.
Refundable deposit: $1,975.
One-year lease required.
Background check and income verification required by the landlord.
