Rent a room in a $1mil+ home in a top area
I'll start by sharing the basics and then will share some info about ourselves personally and our pets for anyone who makes it that far:
YOU--
Must be a single occupant without pets. Ideally a young professional similar to ourselves. Sorry, but we aren't renting to a married couple for space/bathroom reasons. If you have a partner, they can sleep over 2-3x per week if they'd like, as long as it doesn't become an issue. We don't smoke cigarettes, but there's a nice back deck for you to enjoy them if you do.
LOCATION--
Located in Southmost Vancouver, just north of the Columbia River in one of Vancouver's most desired neighborhoods called Old Evergreen Highway. Some of Vancouver's most incredible real estate is a short walk away, with some of our neighbors' homes being $5,000,000+.
There is currently a city re-paving happening of this area to add a massive 10-foot walking path, to make this already awesome area for walking and biking even safer and more accessible than ever. The project is underway and should be finished by this autumn. I'll add some more pics below, but you can easily walk or bike down to the Columbia River or one of its many parks from here. We're a short drive or Uber ride to many of the best restaurants and bars that Vancouver and Portland have to offer, as well as a 7-min drive or Uber ride to PDX airport.
COST & KEY DETAILS--
We will be doing a month-to-month rental for this, and will be asking you to sign a rental agreement, assuming you pass a background and credit check. There is no application fee. Just email through the Spareroom system below, and I will be monitoring incoming inquiries frequently. We can chat briefly and if things sound good, we'll setup a time for you to come visit and see everything in-person.
We are asking $1,200 monthly + $200/mo to go towards utilities, which are costly for a 2,500 sq/ft home with 20+ foot tall ceilings and all these amenities, which I'll explain more about below. One thing to consider, if you look at the cost of a mortgage for a $1,000,000 home at today's interest rates, you'll probably find this rate to be very reasonable.
Bathroom-wise, with this available room, you'll be adjacent to your large 2-section bathroom, which you'll have to share with 1 person only. We will expect everyone to keep any shared spaces tidy and this has not been an issue before in the past. The past roommates have really valued this opportunity/arrangement and done their best to keep the good thing we have going around here as the status quo.
The bedroom itself is large and has 3 massive "picture" windows that look out over our front yard and the cul-de-sac where we live. The windows face South and the room gets great lighting if you're a plant parent. There are custom window coverings with blackout backings, so if you want to live like it's a cave, that's okay, too!
There is a large closet with built-in organizers and really high ceilings. If you're good at organizing or playing Tetris, you can fit a LOT in there. The floors are VERY nice Brazilian cherry hardwoods, which match what goes throughout much of the house. I will add photos of the bedroom soon, but it's ready to be looked at while we are finishing the cleanup and prepping it for a new occupant.
AMMENITIES--
- Whole-house modern air conditioning and heating, so the house always stays a perfect temp.
- High speed internet and great WiFi. There's a plug-in in the bedroom for you to plug directly into our high speed modem if you're a gamer or 4K content enjoyer.
- The 75" 4K TV in the living room is up for anyone to use, and has basically every streaming service or channel under the sun. There's a 13-speaker whole-house sound system that even works out on the custom back deck area. Don't worry, we won't disturb you with the speakers, but they're a nice perk for football games on Sundays or if you'd like to enjoy a cold drink on the back deck during summer.
- We recently spent $100,000+ redoing the entire back yard and deck and this will be one of your favorite areas to hang out. There's a 5-seater salt water hot tub that's state-of-the-art and will require zero maintenance from you. You're free to use it whenever you'd like as long as it doesn't become an issue. It's right next to the ice bath, if you're into that!
There's also a big day-bed back there which is the perfect area for a mid-day nap, with or without the dogs, or simply just a sweet spot to doom-scroll your phone while the water fountains help you drift off to your happy place.
- Plenty of parking in our long, private driveway that's at the back of a fairly well-hidden cul-de-sac. Your car will be safe and secure with our camera system monitoring the exterior of the house 24/7 and being monitored by a professional security system service. We do have a garage for storage of some of your personal items that you need stored, as long as it's nothing too massive or difficult to store.
- Massive commercial-style gym with multiple cardio machines, a full squat rack, Olympic bars, plates, a full dumbbell set that goes up to 60lbs. We also have a lot of mobility and physical therapy tools to keep you feeling right while you live here. Our friends love to joke that they'd happily pay for a membership here rather than go to their usual gym.
- There are numerous gardens around the quarter-acre lot, where I've made use of nearly every inch this property has to offer. There's a beautiful rose garden out front, a shade garden, a "zen" garden, several themed container gardens, a carnivorous plant bog, as well as many fruit & vegetable plants. We are avid green thumbs and garden as a hobby. If you like to learn, you'll love it here. If you don't have an interest, that's fine too! We'll take care of it so you don't have to think about it.
- The gourmet kitchen will be a big selling point for anyone who does meal prep or cooks for themselves. We have a 4-burner gas built-in stovetop, a large convection oven, a large built-in microwave over the oven, a sous vide steam/combi oven, 2 large refrigerators, a stand-up chest freezer, large pantry, and basically every kitchen gadget or appliance you could dream of. All of it free reign for you to use, once again, as long as it doesn't become an issue.
We can certainly find room in the fridge or freezers for anything you need to keep chilled. We can clear out a space in the pantry for just your stuff if you'd like to have a little area for yourself. We want it to feel like your kitchen, because it is!
If you want to learn to cook, I love to teach. If you survive off of DoorDash and Top Ramen, that's okay too. The only rule in the kitchen is don't break stuff or leave a mess, which I think is pretty easy to roll with :)
ABOUT US, OUR PETS AND WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR--
My girlfriend of 5+ years and I have an upcoming vacancy in the home that I've owned for the last 10 years. I've posted a picture of us along with photos and videos of the house, but we are in our mid 30's and both have very stable, well-established careers.
She works in veterinary, and I've owned a real estate business since 2010. I work from home and my hours vary seasonally, so there's stretches where I'm gone frequently, to stretches where business is slow and I feel like an early retiree. I'm happy either way, but like to share so you know what to expect! I work from home and spend 40+ hours a week tucked away in my home office.
We drink socially but not habitually. You're free to do as you please as long as it doesn't bother anyone. There's plenty of room in the beer fridge for your favorite beverages! That said, we don't party often at this point in our lives, as we've left that mostly in our 20's. But we do host some "shindigs" from time to time, usually ranging from a game night with 3-4 friends over, a few of the guys coming over to watch NFL on Sundays, to the biggest gatherings being our annual White Elephant Christmas party, or the annual pumpkin-carving party.
You're welcome to have guests over as well, and we've generally found a really happy balance of really nice and quiet, productive or lazy days around here, with some social gatherings sprinkled in so we don't lose touch with our favorite people. If you like to make new friends, you're likely to make some new ones here, as we are truly blessed with a hilarious friends group who you could trust with your life. The small crew is like family to us, and over a few months I'm sure you'd get to meet most of them.
We have two dogs, although one is 12 years old and we know our "old man-baby" will someday be leaving us. Then we have a younger 6 year old. They're both "staffies" or "pitties" or some mix thereof. I've attached pics of the dorky goofballs as well. If you're a dog lover, you're likely to have two new best friends in no-time. They warm up to new friends quite fast, so you shouldn't have to wait long to get to know them.
In addition, my girlfriend brought her 3 cats with her when she moved in several years ago. They're pretty low maintenance and won't be your issue or responsibility, but if you hate cats, this probably won't be the right house for you. I'm a clean freak and de-hair the house basically every day, and we have about 15,000 sq/ft worth of HEPA filters and filtration devices throughout the 2,500 sq/ft house, so the air is nice and fresh in here always. But still, you might notice some cat smell from time to time, as I've found even with hard work and dedication, there's no way to completely eliminate it. If you do like cats, you'll probably make some more best friends, as they are really affectionate and sweet.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?--
We're looking for a like-minded new roommate who will love sharing this ~2,500 sq/ft custom home, that I've spent the last decade customizing and upgrading from top to bottom. We want someone who has a career and understands this is likely just a "stepping stone" of a rental opportunity, or a launchpad for whatever else comes in your personal and professional life.
That has been what's happened in the past, and we've made some great friends along the way. Literally. Our last few roommates have become so close to us that the're like family now. No pressure intended, but that is kind of our dream scenario.
Made it this far and haven't been scared off yet? Awesome! If you're still interested, feel free to reply to this post with an email and I'll get back to you ASAP. We look forward to hearing from ya'!
