Our house is one of two houses which are part of the Houston Access to Urban Sustainability (HAUS) Project, 501c3. Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a co-op? A housing cooperative is an intentional community which values cooperative principles, including democratic decision making and self ownership. Our members share weekly commitments to household chores such as cooking, cleaning, gardening, maintenance, nonprofit work, and administration. We consider ourselves part of a larger housing cooperative community that has similar styles of housing across many US cities.
How much is rent? Our rooms range from $723-865/month for single occupancy. $200/month extra for double occupancy. Rates include utilities (Wi-Fi, gas, electricity, water, etc.) as well as food (we keep our kitchen stocked regularly). We are looking for housemates interested in building community and our organization. While affordability is a core value to our organization, applicants only interested in cheap rent will not be considered.
Will I fit in? If you’re interested in joining a friendly community of creatives and professionals and want to build something that’s going to last, you’d be the perfect fit. We spend time together, we cook, clean, and celebrate together. Our members value creative expression, social change, and urban sustainability. We also have our private rooms to retreat into.
What responsibilities do members have? Attending bi-weekly house meetings (typically a weeknight such as Thursday), perform house chores/labor each week (we assign 5 hours of labor a week), and being an active member in our community. Labor is worked out as a group to try to find roles that fits everyone’s needs and ability.
What is your pet policy? Pets are accepted on a case-by-case basis, and require an extra $100 pet deposit.
What kind of food is served for dinner? We prepare vegetarian/vegan-friendly meals. All food purchased with our house budget is vegetarian but many residents also cook and eat their own purchased meat.
