Room in Sunnyside
THE APARTMENT: I live on the first floor of a quiet three-story apartment building on a primarily residential street that borders Queens Blvd. My apartment is a one-bedroom apartment that has been converted into a two-bedroom. I occupy the front bedroom (which was once the living room); your bedroom will be the apartment’s actual bedroom. We would share the bathroom and kitchen.
Your bedroom has a door. It comes furnished with a single bed, dresser, bedside table, desk, and chair. It has its own radiator, window A/C, and overhead fan. Two large windows look out on the building next door, offering lots of light. The room has an overhead light, a desk lamp, and bedside table lamp.
PETS:
I own a cat that is a fixture of the apartment. She is quiet and ok with people, but not with other animals (So no other pets allowed.) I keep her food dish and litter box in the bathroom. I empty the litter box and tidy her food tray daily.
COST:
Because my bedroom is slightly bigger than yours, your share of the rent will be slightly less than mine. Moreover, I will pay the utilities and wi-fi. We would, however, share the cost of household supplies: soap, dish liquid, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, etc. I am by no means a clean freak, but I expect my roommate to clean up after themselves when using the kitchen. I also expect them to share in the cleaning of the bathroom and kitchen trading off weekly.
ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD
If you can’t afford or don’t want to live in Manhattan, Sunnyside is a great alternative. To begin with, it is amazingly convenient. My apartment is one block from the 7 train stop and a mere 20 minutes from midtown. The 7 train runs 24/7 and is rated one of the safest train lines in NYC. I work in from home mostly, but I also find myself to Manhattan frequently during my time off. It’s just so quick and easy to get from where I live to great places like Bryant Park, the High Line, or the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Union Square.
Sunnyside has a lot of sky and a friendly neighborhood feel. It is also very safe, especially where I live, close to Queens Blvd. I’ve come home alone by subway very late at night. There are always people getting off at the same stop.
Sunnyside caters to the needs of long-time residents as well as a growing number of young professionals. You’ll find a laundromat across the street, a large Irish deli a few doors away, an asian grocery store a block away, and a hardware store and pizza shop just around the corner. Within a five block radius you’ll find supermarkets, ethnic groceries and delis, numerous pubs and restaurants, cafes, juice bars, health food stores, as well as pizza shops, discount stores, and hardware stores.
