Study zone near Columbia •••
Chore-free private room by Central Park, Broadway restaurants, Amsterdam nightlife, Columbus Sq. shopping, and B/C and 1/2/3 subway stations, in a renovated 4-bed 2-bath corner apt of elevator building 10-12 minute walk from campus.
The experience here is tailored to fellow students and professionals -- with shared amenities unavailable in campus housing, such as multi-gigabit WiFi, creative spaces, productivity essentials, and a chef's kitchen -- but all are welcome here.

Your room:
Private room that is fully furnished, decorated, and equipped with essentials and various amenities. The larger rooms (9.3 m² / 100 ft²) have queen-size (160x200 cm) beds and windows facing the courtyard. This is the smallest room (7.4 m² / 80 ft²) with a single/twin-size bed and a fire escape window facing the street. It has a unique set of amenities and furnishings oriented toward professionals.
Every room has its own closet with space for clothes, includes a refrigerator, microwave, electric kettle, coffee maker, and has window A/C for the summer and steam heat in the winter. Each room has a desk and chair, a nightstand, a full length mirror, hangers for different types of clothing, a small storage dresser for clothes, shelving, work lamps, a white noise machine, and various other essentials (e. g. portable umbrellas, bottle openers, etc).

The common areas:
There are 2 bathrooms shared between 4 rooms. We regularly check the bathrooms to make sure they’re clean and have a full supply of towels and soap. In the meantime, please be considerate of your roommates and try to leave the bathroom as you found it, and let us know if there's anything that needs attention.
Other common areas include the kitchen, living room, and laundry area. The fire escape is technically accessible by all but only through another bedroom, so we ask that you use it only in case of emergency (and in general, please respect the privacy of other others’ bedrooms). All kitchen appliances, silverware, dinnerware, glassware, spices/seasonings/condiments, coffee, tea, and milk are available for your use, as are laundry supplies and all amenities that are on display (or described in our amenities list).

The apartment:
This is a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 1,200 sqft apartment in an elevator building.
Half the apartment is walled by exposed brick and the floors are all hardwood. The decor style is somewhere between mid-century modern and industrial modern, and is themed by the room.
It is a common household (everyone technically has access to all parts of the space) but all doorknobs have push-button locks for privacy.
______________________________
The building:
This building is post-war construction and has an elevator. The apartment itself is recently renovated, but much of the original molding and finishes in the public spaces are intact.
The neighbors are all very nice and friendly. Everyone looks out for each other. Also, you don't have to tiptoe around neighbors or the building superintendent. Roommates are allowed by NYC public policy and the terms of our lease. You are a legal resident here.
______________________________
Noise:
None of the loud apartments are adjacent to this one. There is one on the 4th floor on the other side of the building, but you can only hear them with the window open on Friday nights. We hear footfalls or sliding furniture in the apartment above us occasionally, but it’s rarely noticeable. Also, the neighbors in this building are understanding re: noise, in case we need to knock on someone’s door.
There's a violinist next door, an oboist across the courtyard, an operatic baritone above us, and a show tune tenor two floors down facing the alley, all who practice in the afternoons but you can only hear them a little with the window open.
Sometimes pigeons show up at the windows and hoot at each other, or prance around on the air conditioners. In case they disturb your sleep, we have a fake owl to place in the window that scares them away.
Noise levels in the neighborhood and building are great for Manhattan, especially for the guest rooms that don't face the street, and especially with windows closed. That said, bear in mind that Manhattan is the center of one of the noisiest cities in the world. For those accustomed to the quiet of suburban or rural areas, we include white noise generators in each room, have disposable earplugs available, and will do our best to eliminate any small noises that disturb your sleep.

The vibe:
Generally, this is a chill-house, not a party-house. We do our best to cultivate a library-like atmosphere inside so people can study, especially during exam season. The exception to this are a couple of hangouts we plan each semester during holidays to celebrate finals being over, classes beginning, etc.
We only ask that you keep the volume down, especially at night. Regardless, the wifi is very fast, so stream away.

Spaces you have full access to:
There are 2 bathrooms split between 4 rooms, so you will share a bathroom. We check on the bathrooms regularly to make sure they’re clean and have a full supply of towels and soap. In the meantime, please be considerate of your roommate and try to leave the bathroom as you found it, and let us know if there's anything that needs attention.
The common areas include the kitchen, living room, and laundry area. All kitchen appliances, silverware, flatware, etc are available for your use, as are laundry supplies, and various conveniences around the apartment like the umbrellas, grocery cart, iron and ironing board, etc. If there is something you need but can't find around the house, let me know because if I don't have it I may purchase it, as it might be a nice common amenity to add to the apartment for future roommates.
______________________________
The roommates:
The current roommates are grad students at Columbia—a short walk from the apartment.
Stacy is a sculptor specializing in rapid prototyping and direct body molding. She enjoys reading and cross-stitching.
Philippe is a small grey house cat. He is a hypoallergenic shorthair (breed: Pointed Russian Blue) who is only allowed in the common area when people want to meet him. When he isn’t sleeping, he solicits head scratches and gazes out of his thinking window.
Tyler is a research assistant studying computer science. He enjoys writing music, running, and building stuff.
We have no requirements in regards to race, sex, gender, nationality, religion, politics, age, ability, occupation, or lifestyle. Our only personal requirements are that you are respectful of others.
Also please note this is mostly a chill-house, not a party-house. We do our best to cultivate a library-like atmosphere inside so people can study, especially during exam season. If there's something loud happening outside (like fireworks earlier last year) we offer disposable earplugs, white noise machines in each room, and noise cancelling headphones.
There is a pet fee if you’re bringing a pet with you, and we ask that you keep your pet in your room while at the apartment.

Also, yes this was a hosted private room listing on Airbnb for many years, but I'm trying to find roommates on other platforms due to recent changes in Airbnb's policies and politics.
