ISO roommate queer/LGBT friendly -substance free
1 room open:
Rent a room for a September 1, 2026 one year lease, at $1000 per month, per person, per room.
Pics at the bottom.
THE SPACE
Basic apartment info:
Substance-free space. No substances - alcohol, marijuana, poppers, drugs (plant based or not), etc. in the apartment. We also ask that no one comes home drunk or smelling of marijuana.
1 bathroom, 4 bedrooms. 4 roommates total.
Starting 9/1 rent is $1000 per person, per month. This is $4000 split evenly among all 4 roommates. You can find more about the roommates further down below.
We’re located in the Spring Hill Neighborhood, near 3 Little Figs Cafe.
Red line is approximately (according to online maps) a 12 minute walk to Porter Sq. station and 15 minutes to Davis Sq. station. The walk to Davis is less hilly.
Green line options include Magoun (10 minute walk uphill), Ball Sq (15 minutes), and Gilman.
88 and 90 bus routes pick up on the block.
Your first and last month’s rent, $2000 total, will be required by the landlord for the 9/1 lease. Typically he asks for it in late early August.
Large eat-in kitchen, with a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, disposal, etc. The kitchen is mostly fully equipped by current tenants with coffee makers, electric kettle, rice maker, toaster oven, vitamix blender, etc.
Living room is less furnished, looking to get more bookshelves soon. Space for a comfy chair, or similar. We have a TV and hook ups to it available. There’s also a desk in the living room for anyone to use.
We have no outdoor space. 😢 Fortunatley there's a good amount of afternoon sun house plant space in the living room and a little in the kitchen. 🪴
No driveway. There is on-street parking by Somerville parking permit.
We don’t host big parties but sometimes we have people over for craft night or a game day or a birthday dinner. We like quiet, and company, so we find a happy medium.
Accessibility:
The apartment is on the 2nd floor, 18 stairs up from the front door. The back stairs are steep and uneven.
Many scent sensitivities in the house due to migraines. Please be willing to avoid things that are heavily fragranced. We use fragrance free hand soap, dish soap, dishwasher soap. A1 and A2 use fragrance free laundry detergent. We avoid spraying anything in the common spaces.
The bathroom is smaller. A rollator or a wheel chair does not fit in. No grab bars. A shower stool fits in the bathtub, but not a properly wide shower chair with a back.
Carpeting in bedrooms and hallways.
2 wonderful cats just moved out. Therefore, there is still dander around. We are not looking for new cats or dogs to move in. We understand the importance of them, but are not able to have more now for medical reasons. Companions in tanks/enclosures are welcome.
Due to medical reasons we keep the window ACs on most of the time during summer. Central heating. We generally run the house a little cold year round.
Room 1 specific info:
Room gets morning sunlight.
Ceiling fan.
1 window.
We have a small spare AC window unit to share if you want to use it.
The room is smaller, and L shaped. The vertical line of the L is ~11.5ft long x 7ft wide, with the small foot of the L adding 1ft 8in deep x 4 ft wide.
Can fit a full size bed + desk. If you put a full size bed with the head in the foot of the L, the door won’t open all the way.
Our roommate who is moving out got an IKEA sleeper sofa (LYCKSELE LÖVÅS) to have more space when wanted, which also allowed the door to open all the way when it was closed.
Queen bed also fits in two directions at the top of the L, but it’s tight. Space for small desk or dresser would still fit, but not much else.
Has a closet with some shelving, no doors on closet.
Please see pics below.
Other
ACs are window units.
We have a cleaner come monthly as a reset, which we split the cost for. In addition we share chores within our abilities.
Much of our communication is by messaging. In addition we meet multiple times per month for house meetings.
We let each other know when people will be over.
Laundry is down the hall from the apartment, shared with the upstairs unit. $2 per wash and $2 per dry, but you may have to dry twice for larger loads.
We have a friendly and communicative relationship with our neighbors.
Our utilities average was ~$75 per month per person over the last rental year. We paid $105 per person in both January 2025 and July 2025. July 2026 however, with the heat waves, was $121 per person. Unfortunately we have no control over Eversource continuing to raise their prices because capitalism and climate change.
Based on last year, we approximate that the most a person would be spending here with rent + internet + gas + electric + house supplies + cleaner is around $1250-1300 a month with greater utilities cost. Not guaranteeing, but this seems to be about the most we’ve spent per month here.
ABOUT US
We’re an assortment of these things (varies by person): white, queer, non-binary, neurodivergent folks with chronic illnesses.
A1 is self-employed and works from home. They like to draw and read, and enjoy Star Trek and tabletop games. Partner to A2, and other partners who sometimes visit. Lives with chronic pain and is disabled. They do apartment admin as part of their contributions to the house (collects rent to send to LL, utilities in name, main contact to LL, coordinates communal supplies like TP pick up, etc.) instead of body-heavy chores. Uses KN95 outside the house, and also goes out to eat sometimes, and invites folks over without masks. They have a long list of food allergies that they cannot eat, but they can still be around. A1 is a Jewish anti-zionist.
A2 works in Waltham. Partner to A1 and another partner who lives in Albany, who occasionally visits for a weekend. They commute to work five days a week. Likes writing, video/tabletop games, and werewolves. A2 doesn’t socialize much, but is quiet and accommodating.
M works a lot, and enjoys relaxing at home after a long day. M enjoys crafts.
Note: Not all of our immune systems are great. To discourage sickness sharing, we have a house policy that if we’re sick or suspect we are, to use a KN95 or better mask within the house and limit use of common spaces, as well as wipe things down with Clorox wipes as you go about your business in the kitchen and bathroom. We have successfully saved the other roommates from getting COVID this way. There’s COVID/Flu/RSV tests and masks that all are welcome to in the kitchen.
Please also note: that A1 and A2 rent two of the four rooms, and rent is shared evenly split by all 4 roommates.
ABOUT YOU
Anti-oppression values, including anti-zionism.
Trans and/or queer, or “QTs adjacent” (your partner is queer, etc.)
Can communicate well with others who may communicate differently than you.
Willing to become a community member, or at minimum willing to say ‘hi’ in the hallway, collaborate in monthly house meetings, and coordinate things around the house through messaging.
Will respect the house rule of no substances. Non-negotiable.
Can understand and follow through with expectations around the shared responsibility to take care of the space.
You enjoy peace and quiet.
You might have less stuff for common spaces, as we’re pretty full there. Currently some space in the living room, though bookcases would be beneficial there (for both books and plants). Once we know the roommate/roommate’s furniture situation, we will plan an IKEA trip.
Can pay rent by the 22nd of the month to A1, for them to send to LL (transfer between banks takes time). Can afford utilities, even as the cost rises. Willing to participate in spending $30-40 per person for common spaces to be cleaned by a professional cleaner every 2-4 weeks for a nice reset. Option to add cleaner cleaning your room for an additional cost.
