Roommate Wanted – Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach

Hi everyone! I’m looking for the right roommate to share a nice apartment or condo anywhere from Fort Lauderdale up to West Palm Beach. I’m fairly flexible on the exact location, as finding the right person and the right property is more important to me than being in a specific area.

A little about me: I’m 36, single, and work professionally as a yacht captain. Because of my job, I’m generally out of the country for approximately six months of the year, meaning whoever I live with would essentially have the place largely to themselves while I’m away.

When I am home, I live a pretty quiet and active lifestyle. I’m very much a morning person and am normally up at or before sunrise. I prioritize fitness, healthy eating, fishing, and being outdoors as much as possible. I’m not a party animal at all and very rarely have people over.

I like to keep my home clean, tidy, and reasonably organized, so I’d ideally like to find someone with a similar mindset. That said, I’m definitely not obsessive about it. Life happens, dishes occasionally get left in the sink, and things sometimes get messy. I’m looking for a comfortable home, not a showroom.

The slightly unusual part of the arrangement is my cat.

I have a cat who stays home while I’m traveling, so finding the right person is much more important to me than simply finding someone to split the rent 50/50. I’m looking for someone who genuinely likes cats and would be willing to treat mine as if he were their own and look after him while I’m away.

Obviously, you’d still be completely free to travel and live your own life. If you have plans to leave town while I’m away, that’s not a problem. We can arrange alternative care, and I have friends who are regularly in and out of the area who can help when necessary.

Because of this arrangement—and because I’m away for such a large portion of the year—I’m willing to pay a greater percentage of the rent for the right person. My thought would be to split the security deposit 50/50, while potentially structuring the monthly rent around 60/40, with me paying 60%.

My work situation may change in the future and I may eventually spend more time at home, but I’d be happy to have an agreement in place where your share of the rent remains the same rather than suddenly increasing because my schedule changes.

I’m looking for a nicer apartment or condo anywhere between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, rather than simply finding the cheapest place available. Depending on the property and arrangement, my budget for my portion of the rent is approximately $1,000–$2,500 per month.

One other important consideration is parking. I have a truck as well as a small fishing skiff, so we would need to find a property with a suitable parking arrangement for both, particularly while I’m overseas.

Ultimately, I’m looking for someone responsible, trustworthy, reasonably clean and organized, easygoing, and—most importantly—someone who genuinely likes animals and would enjoy having a cat around.

In return, you’d get a significantly reduced share of the rent on a nice place, and for roughly half of the year, you’d essentially have the home to yourself—with the exception of one four-legged roommate.
