Need a Roommate in Midwood
My nonbinary teen and I live on the top floor of a duplex in a relatively quiet neighborhood. We are looking for a (preferably female) roommate to help share the cost of rent. I would be happy to rent to a student or professional. We are LGBTQ and BIPOC friendly.
We prefer a non-cigarette smoker roommate. If you get high please be discrete (not in front of my child). I need to find someone who is able to keep a job and pay rent on time (no later than the 5th of every month). We have had two roommates in the past, my cousin who lived with us for about 2 1/2 years. And my step-daughter who lived here for 6 months. I would prefer someone who wants to live here for at least a year.
I am an artist and adjunct professor. My hours vary and sometimes I work from home. The child is in 7th grade and stays in their room most of the time. We get along well, so there isn't a lot of drama. I board animals on occasion so you have to be okay with dogs and possibly cats staying for short periods at a time.
The landlord lives in the apt. below us, they are very nice people. You might be able to negotiate a parking space in the driveway if you have a car. The subway (Q and B lines) run right behind the house and we are only a couple of blocks away from the Kings Highway platform. We are close to the beach (Brighten or Coney Island), a bike path (Ocean Parkway), and Brooklyn College.
I have two room possibilities. You could take the small room for $900 or the medium size room for $1000. The price of both rooms includes utilities and internet. I typically buy the toilet paper, paper towels, tissue etc. and I clean the common areas. I'll give you space in the fridge and cabinets if you want to keep food here. You are welcome to use the cooking oils and spices. You have to do your own dishes and buy your own toiletries. I would appreciate it if you vacuum your room the night before the trash goes out, especially if you eat in your room. I will supply the vacuum. We share the bathroom - I keep it clean. Other than that, we will not get into your business - I'm a mom, but I will not mother you. You can come and go as you please and have friends over. Just no parties.
The small room needs a new bed, it's in the front of the house (south window) and has a closet and a couple pieces of basic furniture. The medium size room comes with a queen size bed, a dresser and a bookshelf. The closet for that room is in the back of the house off of the living room. There is not a lot of storage space.
Problem areas: We do not have air conditioning, but you are welcome to purchase a window unit. We have a clothes washer, we dry on a clothesline or drying rack. There is a laundry mat up the street if that doesn't appeal to you.
The subway runs behind the house (B and Q lines) but you get used to it. Sometimes we turn on the Closed Captans when we are watching TV. And you might like a fan in your room for white noise if you take the middle room. You can't hear the trains as well in the small room.
The neighbors downstairs smoke and the smoke comes up through the vents - it can get bad in the winter months when the heat is on. I have been buying air filters with a 12-15 FPR rating which I tape over the vents and that helps. I change them whenever they start to smell - typically every 10 days in the winter. Less often in the summer. But something to think about if you are sensitive to smoke.
That's pretty much it. I'm 57 and cool as hell, so send me a message if you're interested. The room will be available in the middle of May. We can prorate the rent as needed.
