Looking for a new place to call home in NYC

Hi! I'm Rob, and I'm looking for a place I can call home.
I'm looking for a large room in NYC, preferably somewhere with convenient access to the subway. I'm hoping to move by November.
I'm 68, retired, quiet, respectful, easygoing, and pretty self-sufficient. My interests include philosophy, science, and technology, and I'm the kind of person who enjoys learning how things work.
I'm also very handy. I'm comfortable with carpentry, basic electrical and plumbing work, and just about anything involving technology. I can also run and terminate Ethernet cables. I have my own tools, so if a place needs a little work, that doesn't scare me—in fact, I might even enjoy it!
I have a steady retirement income, excellent credit, and a great recommendation from my current landlord. I currently pay $900/month and can afford up to $1,100/month.
I'm a pipe smoker, but I never smoke indoors. Having access to a patio, balcony, yard, or rooftop would be wonderful, although it's definitely not a requirement.
On Saturday mornings, I lead a small recovery group in the Union Square area, based on Buddhist principles. That's one reason I'd particularly like to be somewhere with convenient subway access.
I'm really looking for a place where I can settle in and feel at home, and where I can be a considerate and dependable roommate.
