Planning Ahead – Prospective UMD student

Hello, I'm currently researching housing options around College Park and the surrounding DC/DMV area as I consider attending the University of Maryland in the future.

Just to be clear, I am NOT looking to move immediately and I am not currently a UMD student. I currently live out of state and am still in the process of planning/applying. I'm posting this mainly to get a feel for how viable the SpareRoom market would be before making a major move across the country.

If everything works out, I would be attending UMD and participating in Air Force ROTC. I'm a female in my late 20s, currently serve in the military part-time, and have an established professional career on the civilian side. I'm responsible, clean, respectful of shared spaces, and pretty independent.

I'm particularly curious whether it's realistic to find a room around $300–$500/month, or an alternative arrangement where rent could be reduced (or potentially waived) in exchange for an agreed-upon amount of household help.

I'd be open to things such as:

Pet sitting / pet care
House sitting
Light cleaning and household chores
Grocery shopping or errands
Yard or garden help
Other reasonable household help we mutually agree on

I'd be flexible on location as long as commuting to UMD would be reasonably manageable, especially with access to public transportation.

I'm only interested in safe, respectful, platonic arrangements with clear expectations and boundaries.

Again, I'm planning well in advance and don't need a room right now. I'm mostly hoping to learn what options might be available so I can determine whether moving to Maryland for school is financially realistic.
