Seeking Space in Laid-back Vegetarian/Vegan Home
I am single, quiet, responsible, and thoughtful. I work in arts and antiques, and I work a lot, so I'm rarely home and know how to take good care of the objects in my surroundings. In my free time I like to go to yoga.
I've never had a roommate before, but I need to leave my rental sooner than later. My plan had been to buy a coop, but that fell through, then I was buying a condo and that didn't work out either, so I have readjusted my mindset. After living in the same Greenpoint apartment in or 18 years, I am interested in seeing a different slice of the City or exploring Westchester before I buy and settle down again.... while saving money in the process....
I love the outdoors, especially camping and open water swimming, but don't get out as much I would like to. I prize some degree of intentional/spiritual living. I also prize a degree of levity and irreverence. Once upon a time I lived a very Bohemian lifestyle-- these days I'm very invested in the stability that has come from leaving that behind, but my roots still show:)
I'm open to living with a woman/women or a mixed gender group. I am straight, but tend to click with LGBTQ. I would prefer not to sign a lease, because I do plan on continuing to shop for an apartment to buy, but I could really use a good break from that search, so I won't be in a hurry to get out either.
As for the vegetarian/vegan thing.... which is a very incidental part of how I think of myself.... I'm not bothered by other people's choices, but I am a longtime strict vegan (though I do eat honey) and I can't really imagine feeling comfortable with meat in the home. Though I am not opposed to get-togethers in the home, I also wouldn't be comfortable with partying. Same thing for alcohol, a little is well-and-good, but I don't love drunkenness.
Fiscal responsibility is important to me. I am financially stable, and I want to be in a household where bills are all paid on time.
Here's a poem my best friend wrote about our relationship. It's a good portrait of me.
Like all of Jennifers, Jennifer had
a best friend. This best friend was called
Andrea. Andrea and Jennifer discussed
many things. They discussed childrearing
and husbands and boyfriends
and potential husbands and boyfriends.
They discussed philosophy and memoirs
and the best subway routes.
They discussed al-non and Buddhism:
disability and the po list;
Portland poets and food.
They discussed Jennifer?s alcoholism
and Jennifer?s outfits and
Jennnifer?s reluctance to be in the world.
They discussed Andrea?s WORK habit
and Andrea?s family and homeschooling
and television.
They discussed neurology and
the right side of Andrea?s body and
eating meat versus not eating meat.
They discuss rape and abortion and
being sexualized versus being desexualized.
They discussed Larry Eigner and Jennifer?s
garden and what she should do about it.
They discussed how the neighbor stole Andrea?s bike
and sold it and what she should do about that.
They discussed chandeliers and mirrors
and clothes they landed at the thrift store.
They discussed AWP and why you can?t use a
cell phone on an airplane and the price of
hotel rooms and pets and Jennifer?s husband
and being an artist versus a poet.
They discussed meditation and their dharma teacher
and common household cleaning products
and which was the best public library branch.
They discussed college versus no college
and grants and business plans
and swimming pools and yoga.
They discussed the projects of others and
what it would take to get a teaching job.
They traded ideas and books and
groceries and clothes. They traded
sorrows and worries and happinesses
and printer paper. Andrea could do
things that Jennifer could not do
and she did some of these things for her.
Conversely, Jennifer did things for Andrea;
things that Andrea did not know how to do.
"He is my true friend in the sense that he deeply
cares, I mean, deeply does not care, who I am."
