My situation is quite unique. I was looking at a regular apartment when the landlord I was talking to said she had a unique living situation she thought I might like in another building she owns. Our apartment is a bit of a melting pot - I’m from the US, one roommate is from the UK, and the other is from South Africa. I have five dogs, two are rescues. The property owner has a fenced yard and the property owner allows my dogs. That’s very hard to find! I have been sick for a few years with a birth defect of the pancreas which causes major pain and other health issues that have prevented me from working full time, if at all. I’m from Colorado but I’m living in LA and working as an actor and painter - trying to make rent every month can be a real struggle. I’ve had a roommate for the last ten years to try and afford living.

One of my friends told me about this contest and I’m so glad I signed up. The prize money will go straight to my rent!

My rent is expensive - I’m still paying a higher percentage of my income than I should, but sharing gets me a nicer place in my preferred neighbourhood. I got to stay close to the lake and the El, too.

I’ll use the money to visit my friend in Mexico this winter - she moved there because she can’t afford the rent here!

While an awesome, energetic city full of opportunities, New York is expensive. I’ve shared apartments for the past two years due to the high cost of living. Sharing has also meant that I could easily meet new people and make friends, which was especially helpful when I first arrived in the city.

I entered the contest on a whim while I was looking for apartments and continued to enter with this thought: “Why not?” I’m glad something came out of that!

I’m currently out of town on a trip but I’ll be looking for an apartment when I return, so this has come at an opportune time. I’ll use the money to add to my savings and pay bills. Maybe I’ll order some take-out too to celebrate!

I used SpareRoom when I needed a place to live in a pinch. I lucked out with a great roommate, an awesome location and a great price. We’ve been sharing for about a year now, and we’re planning on renewing for another year.

I figured I’d try my luck and entered the competition not knowing if I’d ever get a chance to win, but I’m glad I entered now! I’ll spend the money on a trip I’m taking to Canada this month.

I’ve never won anything like this before! I’ve lived with at least two roommates for the past 3 years and it’s thankfully been wonderful and cost-effective. I wouldn’t be able to afford living in LA without these friends!

I’ve been taking part in this contest since May last year and never expected I’d actually win, but this comes at an extremely fortuitous time. I’m taking an unpaid vacation this month with what money I’ve managed to save, but it’s been a financial rollercoaster due to some unforeseen car trouble in recent weeks. I work a lot and struggle to get time off to visit family and travel as I’m constantly trying to make rent. I was just wondering today if I could even afford to take leave without giving up food(!) - and then this happened!

I’m 27 years old and have been renting in NYC since 2013, and boy is it expensive! NYC was the best place to be to pursue my media career - so even though the cost of rent is insane, the groceries are triple the price and monthly transportation passes are just another expense to top it all off… it truly is worth it to live in the best city in the world!

Wow this is so amazing! I’m still trying to believe this is real!

I’m a junior nursing student and this is my first year renting an apartment. It’s hard to work during the school year (especially because of my major) so that makes it hard to pay rent without help from my parents. I hope that I can use this extra money to buy another set of scrubs, and treat my parents to a nice dinner as a thanks for all the help they’ve given me!

I never thought I’d win this competition from the few times that I’ve entered, but I am so so thankful. After spending about a thousand dollars on books these last few semesters, it’ll be so nice to have one month to not worry about paying for rent.

I’ve been house sharing for about a year and 3 months, since I moved to NYC and before that I also shared in Syracuse while I completed grad school. Sharing is really the only way to get a decent place to live with affordable rent here. But I also enjoy how sharing enables me to get to know new people I might not otherwise meet.

I entered the competition because who wouldn’t want a free month’s rent?! I’ll use the extra funds to make a trip out to visit my family, since I wasn’t able to do so over the holidays.

I’m a veterinary technician and I live in Philadelphia. I entered this contest after visiting the website looking for more options in terms of renting. Currently I live with my boyfriend, but we want to move out of the city eventually and into a house rather than an apartment - so we’ll likely need a roommate to ease the cost of this.

I honestly never thought I’d get picked, but I know for a fact I wouldn’t if I hadn’t entered! I plan to donate a portion of this money to different charities (including Breaking Ground), and the rest will help the people on my Christmas shopping list…

I’ve been living in NYC for about 6 and a half years. I’ve been lucky to have an awesome roommate, which is much needed in this city because rent is outrageous no matter where you live.

I can’t believe this!

I’m sharing at the moment to save money, but also to share creativity. Last month I moved in with my girlfriend and another friend from college. We had to pay a double security deposit just to move into this place, but we knew it would be worth it. My girlfriend and I are starting a video production company, and the space came with a giant basement that we could convert into a film studio.

We’ve only been here a month, but we’ve made some progress and did our first shoot two weekends ago (it went really well and was a lot of fun!). If we don’t have to pay rent this next month, we will use the money to invest in our film studio. We’re all working artists and every little bit will help us make our dreams of becoming full-time content creators and filmmakers come true.

I am delighted and feel very blessed to be the first winner of your LiveRentFree monthly prize. I have shared SpareRoom with many New Yorkers, especially the SpeedRoommating events you offer. Truly a unique idea. I wish I could say I would be using this for something fun, like a cruise! But I will actually be using the prize to continue to pay my rent in West Village. The rents here are steep, and this will ease my financial pressure this month. I will probably treat myself to a nice foot massage as well though! I am really appreciative of this prize from SpareRoom and will continue to speak highly of the SpeedRoommating events as they are a really safe and direct way to meet prospective roommates.

I realize it was a lottery system in which I won, but I feel very humbled by this and it does have the capacity to change my life. I’m continuously bewildered at the fact that I won.
