Room Available W/ 2 Great Roommates

Ad ref# 100242616

Room available in a Ridgewood apartment with 2 women in our mid 30s. Available January 1, but it's possible to move in earlier if needed (maybe as early as Dec 16-20). Shorter-term is okay, but ideally we'd like to find the right person for at least 6 months, or maybe a year.

$800 monthly rent + $1100 partial last month and security deposit (this amount is based on what we paid when we moved in 9 yrs ago) + 1/3 utilities (not usually more than $75 per month).

$1900 total to move in, with some flexibility on timeline for paying the deposit, depending on your situation. We can discuss. No brokers, managers or fees of any kind.

Photos are with current roommate's furniture--can remain partially furnished if you want, or not.

Rent is due on the 1st every month, in cash if paying on the 1st, by the 20th of the previous month if you need to pay by check. The rent may increase in May or June, depending on when our landlord is planning on some renovations for our apartment and the building. We will of course give as much notice as possible if this happens.

About the room and the apartment:

The room is pretty small (I will update this listing with dimensions), but it works well with a full-sized bed (a queen might work). There's a window, large closet and built-in drawers. It's currently painted brick-red and has book shelves on the walls. You're welcome to re-paint if you don't like the color, and it can be partially furnished if you prefer, or not.

The apartment is a railroad, but does not require anyone to walk through anyone else's room. There are 3 full bedrooms and one "closet room" if you need a little extra storage space. Your room has locking door that leads to the hallway, and you enter back into the apartment through the dining room to use the bathroom and kitchen. It's not terribly inconvenient, and you will get used to it.

There's a huge dining room, full bathroom, kitchen, and a separate living room on the other side of the apartment. Carpet in all rooms except bathroom & kitchen. The dining room gets lots of nice light in the mornings. There's a fire escape that we have plants on in the summer.

The building has 3 apartments: we're on the 3rd floor, with the landlord and his family on the 1st floor, and rotating tenants occupy the 2nd floor--they generally seem very friendly. Sometimes the 2nd floor tenants are a little noisy, but for the most part it has not bothered us.

About us:

One is vegetarian, works in a bakery (usually leaves for work very early). Plays music and makes art, isn't home a lot and/or goes to bed very early most nights. Quiet and friendly.

One is vegan, works in an office in Manhattan. Involved in political activism and spends a decent amount of time at home, often working on projects in the dining room. Goes out of town 2-3 weekends every month.

Our home has always been meat-free, and this has also made it possible for us to live with our other long-term roommates in a peaceful way. We don't insist that you give up meat, as long as you are fine with not cooking any meat at home or keeping it in the refrigerator. We're not crazy militant about it and occasional leftovers or takeout in the fridge would be okay, but we really prefer and feel most comfortable maintaining a vegetarian household.

We're both fairly quiet and keep to ourselves, but we're friendly and we enjoy sharing meals together when our schedules work out (it's rare these days though). We're non-smokers and would not want any smoking indoors. We do have a fire escape if you smoke though. We almost never have parties and don't drink all that much--usually there's some beer in the fridge or a bottle of wine on the counter.

We respect each other's privacy and try to keep shared spaces clean and tidy, which has helped make it possible for us to live together peacefully for over 9 years now. We're looking for someone who wants to live in a similar way.

We're both in relationships, so you might see our partners from time to time. We do our best to keep each other updated on when we're inviting them over, or any other guests. It's not a mandate to inform each other when we're having company, but we try to let each other know whenever possible--especially if we're planning to use the kitchen.

Out of courtesy for each other, we are a little more formal with guests who stay longer than one night. We run it by each other with as much advance notice as possible when we're making plans--especially if it's more than one person, or someone who's never been introduced before. We hope the next person who joins our home appreciates this and strives to do the same.

Unfortunately we can't have any animals in our apartment. Sorry! Our landlord does not allow them and one of us is allergic.

Our place has not gotten the modern update like many places in Ridgewood--it still has old carpet (it's pretty clean though), linoleum floor in the kitchen, and the bathroom could use an update. But we've been here 9 yrs and we love it, and everyone who visits describes it as home-like, comfortable and cozy.

We're in Ridgewood, right on the border of Bushwick, close to a lot of bars, restaurants and coffee shops. There's a huge supermarket a few blocks away (Food Bazaar) and a 24-hr health food store (Hana, off the Jefferson stop). Also near several galleries and event spaces and plenty of public transportation: we're in between the Dekalb stop on the L and Myrtle-Wyckoff L and M stop. Also near Ridgewood Bus Terminal. Starbucks and Planet Fitness right outside the train stop.
